SUPPORT BY P.M.

Sweden As Republic (N Z.P.A.-Reuter —CopuriohN STOCKHOLM, January 13. The Swedish Premjer (Mr Erlander) supports a move which could eventually lead to Sweden becoming a republic and abolishing its monarchy.

A motion by 34 members of Parliament called for a Parliamentary committee to investigate the possibilities of introducng a democratically-elected chief of state in a republic. The Parliamentary Advisory Committee, headed by Mr Erlander, has approved the motion.

The sponsors claim that the hereditary monarchy is one of the most old-fashioned elements of the present administration.

The motion says King Gustav Adolf will be 84 next November and Crown Prince Gustav will only be 20 on his next birthday in April. He cannot ascend the throne until he is 25. Under the present constitution, executive power is in the hands of the King, who acts on the advice of a Council of State, headed by the Prime Minister.
