Sir,—ln his reply (“The Press,” January 4) to my letter the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Mr G. C. Urquhart) says that the tear smoke (tacitly acknowledged to be bromobenzyl cyanide) “is not lethal.” This state-

ment illustrates the risk of persons whose knowledge is only extrinsic having the use of dangerous chemicals. The writer has seen men die from “normal” doses of different drugs, and his own health is permanently ruined by the inhalation of a vapour not then generally recognised by doctors as dangerously toxic The report in “The Press” of January 13 that “non-toxic gas and smoke has killed one Australian . . . although wearing a gas mask . . . and sent six others to hospital” speaks for itself. Unfortunately, the police threat to use the new gun “in cases of absolute necessity” is in effect a notification to anyone “cornered” to kill or risk being killed rather horribly, and this “escalation” of tension will not . . .—Yours, etc., KEEP VIETNAM FROM NEW ZEALAND.
