'Rats Of Tobruk’ Padre Visiting New Zealand

(N.Z. Press Association)WELLINGTON. January 12. One of the “Rats of Tobruk." Brigadier A. Mcllveen, an Australian officer of the Salvation Army, is visiting Wellington during a two-month holiday in New Zealand. The 79-year-old brigadier was padre with the 18th Infantry Brigade during the 242-day siege of Tobruk in 1941. He is a life member of the Rats of Tobruk Association in New South Wales and has been honorary padre to the association for many years.

, He said today that it had i been a great privilege to be ] asked to conduct the service ■ commemorating the twentieth anniversay of the siege. The service was held at Tobruk, and many countries sent contingents to it. Brigadier Mcllveen said that after returning from the war he had been a prison chaplain for eight years. Since his retirement he has visited military hospitals throughout Australia. He intends to stay in Wellington for a week before travelling to the South Island. He plans to return to I Sydney on February’ 14.
