WAITAKI HANOVER WINS
Waitaki Hanover, a recent addition to A. J. Bourne’s team, showed that he is making good progress in his preparation for the Dunedin Festival Cup when he outclassed his rivals in the first heat of the Free-for-all at the Mid - Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association’s trials at Ashburton yesterday.
M. Holmes took the Dune-din-owned entire to the front with a mile to go and let him set his own pace without being bustled. On the home turn, Waitaki Hanover was out by three lengths from Fox Able and in the run home widened that lead and won by almost 10 lengths from Pancho Boy, which had been in about the fourth line most of the way. Jacobite, due to leave for Svdney soon to compete at the Inter-Dominion Championships, ran encouragingly for third. He was one of the tail-enders half a mile out but improved several places with a strong run on the inner in the last furlong. Jacebite was half a length from Pancho Boy and a head tn front of Ha! Special Peel was next followed by Golden Oriole, which ran on after a slow start. Waitaki Hanover ran the mile and a half in 3min 21see. the last half-mile in Imin 4sec. LIKELY IMPROVER The second heat went to Mitcham. a likely improver engaged in the South Canterbury Handicap at Washdyke tomorMitcham improved quickly from the fourth line to challenge Vanese and Flying Over for the lead outside the last furlong and did not have to be extended to beat Throwaway by a little more than a length. Throwaway, third equal mostlv, was half a length ahead of Space Cadet, which came from far back. Dieman Lad, another tail-ender until late tn the race, did best of the others Mitcham's time for the mile and a half was 3min 21 3-osec Her last half-mile took Imin 4 4-ssec.

F. Murfitt ,and Really Good, a handsome black colt b-y Goodlands which R. L. Tatterson trains for Mr C. L. Rhodes, won their respective heats of the Two-year-old Parade. Lucky Gay improved several places In the run home in the first heat to win by a length. In a tight finish Stewart Hanover took second by a head from an unnamed Flying Song gelding. Mokoreta, one of the slow est beginners, was a neck away fourth. Lucky Gay paced the mile tn 2min 18 4-ssec, which was 4 4-ssec faster than it took Really Good in his heat. Really Good battled it out with Renate .a Johnny Globe filly trained by M. Holmes, and won by a head. Johnny Kawa, which led into the straight, was a fair third, ahead of Adios King. Loyal Smoke, usually seen as a trotter, was tried as a pacer, and caught the pacemaker, Lord Cecil ,in the last few strides to win the 2min 19sec class pace. Loyal Smoke took
3min 27sec for the mile and a half. Space Chief and Highland Fortress led all the way to win their heats of the 2min 20sec class trot. Space Chief won the first heat by two lengths from Martin Brigade, which received the run of the race. Cleome, the likely favourite for the Rosewill Handicap at Washdyke tc morrow, ran a sound race for third from 60 yards. Space Chief’s, time for the mile and a half was 3min 41 2-ssec. This was 3 2-5-sec faster than Highland Fortress took to run the same distance. The well-performed Rannack Lad made ground in the run home without being bustled and ran Highland Fortress to a head. Royal Court and Royal Joan were best of the others. The 2min 20sec class pace won by Par Avion, which improved from the third line to shade Chief Smile and Saracen right on the line. The time for the event was 3min 32 2-ssec for the mile and a half.
