REMOVAL OF GRAVES
Making Route For Motorway (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 13 The Ministry of Works expects to move 1100 graves from Grafton cemetery, near the centre of Auckland, by winter to make way for the inner city motorways system. The graves of Captain William Hobson and other leading pioneer settlers and administrators will not be affected. The District Commissioner of Works, Mr E. A. Flynn, said today there were some problems in tracing relatives of those buried in the cemetery. Four years’ research by Ministry staff had traced about 80 per cent and others were being sought. They would be consulted about the removal and reinterment of remains.
I The Ministry was also consulting Anglican and Catholic Church authorities, the Health Department and other Government Departments. Mr Flynn said screens would have to be erected around the site during the work.
