Scott Base Field Work Completed

(Special Correspondent N.Z P A »

SCOTT BASE, January 13. The geological portion of New Zealand's work in Antarctica this season has been completed.

After seven weeks in the field the northern party has returned to Scott Base.

In the Aviator and Campbell Glacier area, 250 miles north of Scott Base, this party has been investigating the age of the McMurdo volcanics and granite intrusions down the sides of the Campbell Glacier.

The senior geologist, Mr R. Adamson, said evidence was found for calculating the latest eruption of Mt. Melbourne, in the lower Campbell Glacier area. “A dark ash layer is compressed in ice faces about this 10.000 ft volcanic cone. The thickness and time taken for the upper ice layers to form will give the age of the eruption.” said Mr Adamson The field leader. Mr D Lowe, said each of the two motor-toboggans used by the party had travelled 470 miles. “Deep soft snow often hampered the party and we had to lie up for a total of 19 days because of white-out conditions and high winds," said Mr Lowe.

Other members of the party were a geologist, Mr Cavaney, and a field assistant, Mr R. Bates.
