MINIMUM WAGE
Refusal By Firm Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 13. Demands by the Auckland Freezing Workers’ Union that 17 men be dismissed at the works of the R. and W. Hellaby Company, Ltd., could not be met, a company official said tonight. The company has been asked to guarantee workers a minimum rate of £5 10s a day or dismiss the men. The dispute began on Tuesday morning when mutton butchers walked off the job because the company refused to pay the minimum rate. There has been no work since and it is not known when work will resume. On Wednesday the company dismissed 32 workers in an effort to provide extra work —and more pay—for more permanent employees. A shortage of lambs for killing at Hellaby’s, which has reduced working hours, has cut weekly wages of workers to around £2l. At this time of the year they could expect to be earning about twice that amount.
