HOLIDAY TRAFFIC

Patrols Kept Busy

A few traffic officers of the Transport Department will go on holiday, as holiday traffic lessens. The department in Canterbury had 34 cars and 10 motor-cycle patrols on the road at Christmas and more officers on duty than in any previous holiday period. Plain cars also patrolled.

Between December 24 and January 2 Transport Department officers arrested three persons for driving while intoxicated and took keys from 20 drivers.

Microwave units checked 7835 vehicles, and 249 traffic offence notices were issued as a result. Nearly 1500 warnings were issued for various offences. The two m<rt prevalent offences were excessive speed for the conditions and following other vehicles too closely. The Christchurch City Council traffic superintendent (Mr J. F. Thomas) said traffic generally had been very light in the city during Christmas although the first shopping day after Christmas had been busy.

Officers issued 86 traffic offence notice between December 24 and January 4, and five drivers had their keys taken for driving under the influence of drink or drugs.
