N.Z. Davis Cup Entry Made
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. New Zealand has entered the European zone of the Davis Cup for 1966, but so far only four players have indicated they are available for a team to go to Europe.
The chairman of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association manage-
ment committee, Mr G. C. Reid, said yesterday that a team of three players and possibly four would be sent to tour Europe later this year.
The four players definitely available for the tour are L. A. Gerrard, J. B. Souter, R. N. Hawkes and G. Elliott. Of the 13 players who were asked if they would be available, J. E. Robson, A. S. Burns, J. H. Lockington, K. H. Long, R. G. Clarke and J. Mitchell have all replied that they are not available. Three Not Replied
I. S. Crookenden. B. F. Fairlie and N. McAffer have not yet replied. It is understood that Crookenden, who is currently in the United States, will not be able to make the tour. Mr Reid said that at least one of the players sent overseas would be a youngster. He said it was possible that more juniors would be asked if they are available. Logical choices would be O.
Parun, of Wellington, who defeated Lockington in the New Zealand championships this week, and D. Cassidy, of Auckland. Mr Reid said the European zone would be just as competitive as the American zone, which New Zealand has entered for the last two years. “We have swapped,” he said, “because the European zone has the convenience of the European circuit.”
