CANTERBURY S.P.C.A.
Resignation Of President
The president of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Mr A. Bullivant) no longer holds that position. He handed his resignation to the secretary early last month.
In a circular letter to members Mr Bullivant said he would no longer be associated with the society and had handed in his resignation. Mr Bullivant thanked all members “ . . . who supported animal welfare.” He also wrote a letter to the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) in which he expressed concern at the administration of the society. Mr Holyoake, he said, had accepted nomination as patron of the Canterbury society.
Mr Bullivant also wrote to the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning), who replied i that his letter indicated the [unfortunate position of the administration, which was 1“ . . . somewhat revealed in the newspapers and reports of the meetings.” “I do hope that the administration will improve and that the society will aim seriously at its objectives.” Mr Manning said that unfortunately he did not have the time available to enter into the organisation side of the society, but accepted being patron as an indication of his interest in the objectives of the society. Member Asked To Resign
A member of the council of the Canterbury S.P.C.A. was asked to resign at a meeting of the society on Wednesday evening. Two other members also resigned. The chairman (Mr J. Quickenden) who confirmed the report last evening said that the least said about the matter the better.
“This was purely a domestic matter over a breach of rules,” said Mr Quickenden. “The member concerned was most co-operative, and I have no wish to hurt him or the society by taking the matter further. The whole thing was resolved in a friendly way.”
