SHARK NEAR SWIMMERS
Alarm Given At Whangamata (N.Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 13. Hundreds of swimmers fled from the water at Whangamata today when an eight-foot shark swam to within 50 yards of them about midday. A member of the Whangamata Life Saving Club (Mr B. Bryant) was on a surf ski out from the patrolled area of the beach when a shark passed underneath him, within inches of his ski. heading toward the 400 to 500 swimmers. Mr Bryant gave the alarm. Everyone left the water immediately. Surf club members also reported seeing three smaller sharks later in the day. Few people returned to the water in the afteroon.
Slight Damage.— Slight fire damage was caused to the wooden part of a woodshavings hopper above the boiler at Star Wood Products, Ltd., 29 Grey road, Timaru, at 4.15 p.m. yesterday. The Timaru Fire Brigade sent two machines.—(F.O.O.R.)
