New Zealand is paying £3011,000 towards the cost of an all-weather road in Thailand between Buriram and Borabu (shown on the map below), supplying most of the equipment and 15 officers and n.c.o.'s of the Royal New Zealand Engineers to supervise construction. Thirteen of the engineers left for Thailand last Tuesday to work on this Colombo Plan scheme which is part of the Thai Government's plans to extend economic and welfare services into the less accessible areas of the country. The Buri rani road will open up a tract of flat, savannah land with a high agricultural potential. Road building in Thailand is also part of the effort to counter subversive activities inspired by China, especially in the north-east provinces, and to improve military communications. This article describes how Thailand is already involved in the struggle in South-east Asia.
