ADDIAGTOA MARKET Strong Interest In Store Lambs

The store sheep yarding was up to nearly 17,000 head at the Addington market yesterday. Most were lambs, and these met another good sale although there was a slight easing over the closing stages. Ewe lambs had a buoyant sale. In the adult sheep section there was only a small offering of two-tooth ewes. These sold up to £5 2s for useful Romneys.

Older ewes were mainly weak in the mouth and consequently made about freezing rates or a little better, but for the odd pen with a better mouth there was a good sale.

The offering totalled 16,657 head compared with 4491 at the store sheep sale last week. The selection included 13,092 lambs (3517 last week), 443 two-tooth ewes (83), 2796 older ewes (726) and 326 wethers (none). Store Lambs Store lambs met another good sale, although with a much increased yarding values eased over the concluding stages as buyers filled their requirements. The sale continued for four hours. A very large gallery followed the sale for the first two hours, and values for wether lambs, apart from an odd pen at the start, were well up to those of last week. Ewe lambs, for the most part, met a buoyant sale. This was the first time that ewe lambs had come forward in appreciable numbers, and there were some well-grown, wellwoolled lines. The top Romney ewe lamb price was 75s for the best of a line from S. C. Brown (Oxford), while the best Corriedale ewe lamb price was 78s for a pen of 96 from J. McDougall (Bowenvale). Romney wether lambs, as usual, ’were keenly sought, especially where they were carrying a good fleece. The market appeared to be above last week’s good rates at some stages, with the tops selling to 64s 6d for the best 94 of a line from D. S. Anderson, Gibraltar Farm, Otahuna. Corriedales, particularly where there was size and quality, also met a ready sale, with the best selling to 60s for the tops of a draft from C. E. Trewin, Glenstrae, Oaro. Some large lines of lambs

were forward, one of the largest being a consignment of over 900 halfbreds from A. F. S. Rutherford, Montrose. The tops of the Montrose ewe lambs sold to 66s and the tops of the wethers to 60s.

Although values in the afternoon receded by 3s or so on opening rates, the sale was still a very good one for vendors. Romney lambs showing quality were selling steadily at about 555. and good quality fine-wool wether lambs at around 50s. Best Romney wether lambs sold to 64s 6d, with good from 50s to 57s 6d; best fine-wool wether lambs from 56s to 60s, with good from 49s to 555, and smaller sorts down to 455. Best Romney ewe lambs sold from 65s to 755, and medium to good from 59s to 645; best Corriedale ewe lambs sold from 71s to 78s, with good from 65s to 70s.

Down cross lambs were forward in only small numbers and sold mainly from 48s 6d to 54s 6d for the best, with small sorts down to 445.

Two-tootli Ewes The yarding of two-tooth ewes comprised only about 11 pens. It included two or three pens of useful Romneys and an odd pen of average to good fine wools. The best of the Romneys, which were from Banks Peninsula, realised from 93s to £5 2s, with average to good at 75s 6d to 87s. In the case of the fine wools the best brought to 80s 6d, with average at 62s to 72s and others at down to 355. Details of the leading sales of younger ewes were:—R. G. Luderman (Barrys Bay), 78 Romneys at £5 2s; G. Steele (Port Levy), 89 Romneys at 93s to 975; estate P. W. F. Smith (Clarence Bridge), 160 halfbreds at 62s to 70s. Older Ewes The older ewe offering was much bigger than at recent markets but still of quite modest proportions, and the sale of two-tooth and older ewes was over in about an hour and a half. Many, of the older ewes had little to commend them for breeding, and for that reason only brought around freezing rates or a little better, but for the few ewes with some sort of a mouth there was a good inquiry, although it is early vet for the purchase of replacement stock. The sale was followed by a fairly large gallery. A line of three and four-shear Border Corriedale ewes sold to 80s 6d and four, six and eighttooth fine wool ewes realised 60s and two. three and four-shear and two and four-tooth fine wool ewes made from 45s to 47s 6d. The better class older fine wool ewes in the entry realised! from about 50s to 58s 6d. with! average sorts at 40s to 47s and i those with poor mouths made from about 28s to 355. The ■ poorer class of Romney ewe in the freezing category sold from about 29s 6d to 355, with aver age sorts at 40s to 46s 6d. There was little in the way of good Romney breeding ewes in the market. Among sales of older ewes quoted by stock firms were: J. H. Cooke (Te Pirita) 296 five-year-old Corriedales at 495; J. G. Dalzell (Culverden). 55 earlyshorn five-year-old Corriedales at 58s 6d and 120 Novembershorn five-year-old Corriedales at 555; P. J. Coleman (Godley Heads), 160 Corriedales at 40s to 43s 6d; Montana Farm (Oxford), 100 Border Corriedale three and four-shear ewes at 80s 6d. Wethers Few wethers were yarded—there were about seven pens, some of which were only part filled. The best of the two tooth wethers made from about 60s to 70s. Some eight-tooth wethers ranged from 41s to 445. Sales of wethers quoted by stock firms included: —K. C. O’Fee (Omihi), 44 Romney cross two-tooths at 67s 6d to 70s; J.
