Patanga Beats Some Notable Cup Rivals
"The Press’’ Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH.
Patanga won the “Sonny” Smith Memorial Handicap handsomely at the Pahiatua meeting yesterday and it was a first-class trial for the Wellington Cup.
Patanga, running in the first four all the ! way, kept out of the ; trouble which those farther hack met in the big field and he had a length and a quarter to spare over Laramie at ! the finish. K. E. Reggett rode Patanga | yesterday but he will be on; Apa in the Wellington Cup. ; Patanga, which favours left-1 handed tracks, already has a| placing at Trentham over two; miles to his credit. Laramie ran a minor place! after being in a little bother! near the half-mile. Bandon was a close third; after looking likely a furlong; out. His rider, R. W. Taylor, was not over-enthusiastic | about the placing as a Wellington Cup trial, but pointed j out that Bandon had to be ridden early from an inside draw to get a handy position. Bandon drops considerably in weight in the Wellington Cup and he looked yesterday as if the race would improve him. John Derry, fourth, also ran a good race. He and Grand Filou collided at the start, but John Derry came off the better. He spoilt a chance of paying a dividend by hanging during the last furlong. Hi-Minx, sixth, was one of several which did not get a good run. Another was Straight Irish. Rashid loomed up on the home turn, wide out, but] weakened. Sir Barton finished in great style for fifth and looks an early improver. The favourite, Grand Filou, was a moderate eighth. He was well back to the halfmile and off the course when he made the home turn. i Grand Filou looked well,! but he is a gross horse and missed a little work after his! Auckland win due to injuries! he received on the way to! Ellerslie. Dalvui, which shared the' lead with Prince Hagen to the I straight, drew away to complete the T.A.B. double in the Ballance Handicap. The Patanga-Dalvui combination paid £BB 15s for £l. Bywon finished well for second and Star of Kildare,
after making a bid at the furlong, weakened a shade to third. The weather was fine and mild and there was a large attendance. The track had the sting out of it, but was faster than on the first day. I The on-course turn-over 'was £68,058 10s as against £60,393 last year, an increase of £7665 10s. The total for the meeting was £133,629, as against £128,093 10s last year, | an increase of £5535 10s. Results: i PONGAROA HIGH - WEIGHT, I £450; 11f.—5 6 LLANDUDNO (4) |9-8i B.
