CHEVIOT GIRL WINS GOLF FINAL
The Cheviot girl, Miss M. Ensor, beat Miss R. Bennett (New South Wales), 4 and 2, in the final of the matchplay tournament, featuring juniors from New Zealand and New South Wales, at Waitakiri yesterday.
Miss Ensor, who began by putting badly, gained a clear superiority over the last eight holes. Two up after 12, Miss Ensor chipped well to win the thirteenth, and then sank a 7ft downhill putt for a birdie at the fourteenth, to be dormie four. Miss Bennett was back a
hole at the fifteenth after Miss Ensor had landed in a bunker. However, she was an inch short for a birdie at the sixteenth and then watched Miss Ensor roll in an Bft putt for a birdie and the match. Straighter woods and irons made Miss Ensor look the better player. She hit a very flat trajectory for the tee, but some of her fairway woods failed to get off the ground. Slight Player However, the 18-year-old Miss Bennett, a very slight player, appeared to be about to fall over backwards when playing a wood, so great was her backswing. She got a good length but was often on the edge of the fairway. She had played a brilliant 73, two over par, in the morning, and looked to be a little tired in the final. Neither player had much trouble to win her semi-final in the morning, both by a margin of 4 and 3. The teams will play 18 holes at Amberley today, before beginning the test at Shirley.
