KILLING OF CATS
‘Use For School Biology’
Cases of school pupils killing cats for dissection in school biology classes were cited at last evening’s council meeting of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. One woman recounted a case of a girl catching a kitten, and killing it herself, for [dissection, after seeing a similar operation in a t bool biology class. “It’s just teaching children to be cruel,” the woman said.
“This wants looking into,” said Mr C. C. Lennon, of Timaru, president of th ■ New Zealand Federation of S.P. C.A. Societies, who attended, and had just addressed the meeting.
An interjector: Can we fight the Government Mr Lennon? Mr Lennon: It’s not a case of fighting the Government. We have an Animals Protection Act.
“Our Miss Howard was going to look into this—but she must have forgotten,” said another woman.
The keeping of crocodiles in a North Beach private aquarium also came under criticism, on the grounds F at the space they were confined in was inadequate and with insufficient water. After brief discussion, it was decided to instruct the society’s inspector to visit the premises to see what progress had been made on improvements —“and to give them a hurry-up” said the chairman, Mr J. Quicken den.
