January 13. HOKITIKA HOLIDAYS.—The usual ceremony of welcoming in the sweet new year has occupied the inhabitants of Hokitika during the commencement of the past week. The weather has been all that the most sanguine plea-sure-seekers could desire. On Wednesday evening, however, the rain set in steadily for the night, ".nd continued through most of the succeeding day, causing a fresh in the river, and raising the vessels in the stream to nearly the level of the wharf. Gibson’s quay, the B street fronting the river, came in for its usual “Benjamin’s mess” of water, a great proportion of which still remains, unsightly without doubt, but neverthe-
less vary convenient for carters to wash their horses’ feet in. It is to be hoped that the extension of the wharf, now in progress, will have been so far completed to as to obviate a recurrence of this nuisance. Crowds of diggers, evidently bent on enjoying this festive season of the year, have managed to pass the week with the assistance of the publicans, Caledonian sports, greasy poles, horse racing. &c., &c. Miss Palmerston is a great attraction in her Protean entertainment. Several other worldrenowned celebrities, whom no-one ever heard of before, are nightly displaying their inimitabilities (?)—From our own correspondent, Hokitika January 6. ( *
