TWO CANTERBURY ATHLETES who promise to achieve national recognition this season are J. D. Macdonald (Riccarton, left) and J. Power (University). Macdonald, the Canterbury steeplechase champion and record holder, has a great chance to win the national steeplechase which will be held on his home course in March. He gave an indication of the fine form he is in when he went well inside K. Williams’s 15-year-old provincial two-mile record last Tuesday in finishing second to B. Dyer (Christchurch). Power, the New Zealand Universities three-mile champion, showed rare form for one with only three days’ training behind him in a three-mile race just before Christmas. He finished an excellent runner-up to Macdonald in 14min 46.8 sec, a performance which indicated tremendous untapped potential.
