Burtt made 53 for Canterbury against Central Districts at New Plymouth a few days ago, he became the first Canterbury player for nearly 20 years to begin his shield career with a half-century. The last time a newcomer enjoyed such a distinctive debut was in 194647, when F. B. Smith made 77 for Canterbury against Otago at Lancaster Park.
