KAIKOURA SURFING
’THE first surf carnival ever held at Kaikoura attracted more than 500 spectators and succeeded in arousing considerable interest in water safety in the area. A portable reel was demonstrated and if the beach at Mangamauna Bay is opened for swimming, as seems likely, a reel will probably be bought for it. The demonstration was ably given and made a forceful impression on the spectators. I. Greig demonstrated
mouth-to-mouth resuscitation but the demonstration on the ambu manikin was not a success as it was about five years old and not in very good condition. Small surf reduced the races as a spectacle but some of Canterbury’s top performers took part and there is every reason to expect the sport to acquire a good following at Kaikoura. The winner of the surf race was the reigning Canterbury champion, D. Staples.
