MAGISTRATE’S COURT Youths Stole Tokens And Money From Milk Boxes

“This was a pretty miser- . able, sneaky theft, and a childish thing to do,” said Mr E. IS. J. Crutchley, S.M., in the | Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when he convicted Brian James Jacobsen, aged 18, unemployed, and Robert Dicky, aged 19, a fettler, of stealing milk tokens and money from milk boxes in Trent street on January 11. Jacobsen was charged with stealing 22 milk tokens and cash valued at 12s 4d, and Dicky was charged with stealing 2s 7jd from a person or persons unknown. Both pleaded guilty. Dicky was fined £7 10s, and Jacobsen was remanded in custody to January 13 for a medical report to determine whether he is fit to enter a detention centre. Sergeant P. J. Alty said that at 12.45 a.m. yesterday the accused were seen acting suspiciously in Trent street. When apprehended by the police both admitted taking money and tokens from several milk boxes, but could not say which boxes they had pilfered. They said they had not been working since Christmas and had run short of money. The Magistrate, at the request of Sergeant Alty, ordered that the recovered tokens and money be returned to the householders of Trent street. STOLE JACKET Anthony Thomas Stroud, aged 19, a casual labourer, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a leather jacket valued at £l7 17s. He was convicted and remanded on bail to January 17 for sentence. During the afternoon of January 10 two youths went into the shop of Vance Vivian, Ltd., at 216 High street, examined a leather jacket, and then left, Sergeant Alty said. When another youth came to purchase the jacket it was found to be missing. About 9.30 p.m. a salesman from the shop saw the accused wearing the jacket at a picture theatre, and called the police, said Sergeant Alty.

THEFTS AT HOTEL Rachel May Struthers, aged 19, a hotel worker, was convicted and remanded on bail to January 17 for sentence when she appeared on charges of stealing sheets and a pillow-case valued at £3 3s, the property of the Russley Hotel, and a comb valued at 10s 6d, the property of John Cyril Morris, on January 2. Struthers pleaded guilty'. Sergeant Alty said that on December 31 the accused worked at the Russley Hotel for one day and was then dismissed. After she had taken employment at another hotel, a guest reported the theft of a hand-made bone-handled comb from his room at the Russley Hotel. The accused was interviewed at her home, where the stolen articles were found. STOLE £lO Ernest James Blair, aged 22, a blacksmith (Mr S. G. Erber), was convicted and fined £5 when he appeared on a charge of theft of £lO, the property of Florence Cathleen Wilson, on January 10. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant Alty said that at 1 p.m. on January 10 the accused bought a pie at the complainant’s shop. She invited him to eat it at the back of the shop and then left him to attend to customers.

While she was in the front of the shop, the accused walked past and out into the street without saying anything, said Sergeant Alty. Later the complainant found that a money bag she kept at the back of the shop had been tampered with and a £lO note was missing from it She called the police, who found the note hidden under the seat of the accused’s van. CONVICTED John Leonard Dale, aged 23, a truck driver, was convicted and remanded on bail to January 17 for a probation report and sentence when he appeared on a charge of breaking and entering solicitors’ offices in Wellington on September 25. He pleaded guilty.

FINED £2O John Santos, aged 33, a slaughterman, was convicted and fined £2O when he appeared on a charge of peeping through the window of a dwelling house by night at 359 Gloucester street on January 10. He pleaded guilty. REMANDED A man whose name was suppressed (Mr S. G. Erber), was remanded on bail to January 13 when he appeared on a charge of breaking and entering premises at 117 Salisbury street on January 10. PERIODIC DETENTION A sentence of periodic detention at the Bristol street work centre for six months was imposed on Terrence Andrew Harner. aged 19, a plasterer, when he pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a duffle bag and suitcase and contents worth £25 17s 8d on December 29.
