RACING Tomkinson Has Four Going To Trentham

The Riccarton trainer, J. C. Tomkinson, will take four members of a likely-looking team to Trentham next week for the Wellington Cup meeting.

He will travel north on Wednesday of next week with Shipmate, Pharasal, Hushaway, and Time and Tide.

Standout, which failed to qualify for a start in the Wellington Cup, but was entered for other races at the meeting, will not make the trip. He will be kept for the Canterbury Jockey Club's summer meeting next month. Shipmate was impressive in a half-mile sprint on the trial grass at Riccarton yesterday. He was easing down in the hands of his regular rider, A. J. Stokes, near the end, yet recorded 50 3-ssec for the distance. Im|>ressive Time and Tide (B. Collins) followed over half a mile in 51 2-ssec. He has freshened and built up since he last raced.

After winning four races in successive starts, one at Riccarton, two at Hokitika and one at Greymouth, he was bought by Mr D. W. J. Gould, chairman of the Canterbury Jockey Club. He will have his first start in the Gould colours at Trentham.

Royal Bid (F. H. Skelton) was steadily drawing away from Tracey's Comet (Mrs V. Clutterbuck), though under a good hold, after running a mile, the last seven furlongs in Imin 32 l-ssec, the last four in 52 l-ssec, and the final three in 38 3-ssec. They galloped on the plough. Royal Bid will probably be the only Riccarton Ira: ed runner in the Wellington Cup, but he will be a strong representative. He appears to have thrived since his Dunedin Cup victory. Pharasal (A. J. Stokes) and Hushaway (B. Collins) sprinted half a mile on the plough

in 50 3-ssec. the last three furlongs in 37sec. Good Run Pharasal, a hack, worked well alongside Hushaway, an open class performer. Talic (A. H. Eastwood) drew out impressively to finish half a mile with a lead of three lengths over Royal Blue (D. Tucker). Royal Blue held a short lead early in this gallop on the grass, but Talic closed strongly and pulled away easily to record 48 4-5 sec.

Oh Sally (P. Ryall) showed early speed after starting near the five furlongs, and, though shortening stride at the end, she recorded 49 2-5 sec for the last half-mile. Quick Flight (F. H. Skelton), a lazy worker solo, took 53 2-ssec for his half-mile on the plough. He will probably miss the Wellington Stakes and run in hack races at Trentham.
