Royal Tour Problems
. (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Jan. 11. Officials of the Internal Affairs Department are busy doing what one said today was “the difficult task” of selecting public engagements for the Queen Mother when she visits New Zealand in April.
The department has received from both the Government and local bodies proposals that she attend certain functions.
The director of the Royal tour, Mr J. V. Meech, confirmed tonight that these exceeded the number which might be reasonably fitted in to her itinerary. “This is often the case when such a tour takes place
or an international figure visits the country,” he said. About six persons in the department were now working on various aspects of the tour.
“We are planning details of the tour programme including functions and entertainments which Her Majesty may attend,” said Mr Meech. “When a tentative final programme is settled, we will
have to hold discussions with local bodies to confirm arrangements.
“It will probably be about three weeks before we can make any further public announcements concerning tour details.”
The Queen Mother is due to arrive at Bluff in the Britannia on April 16. She will leave New Zealand from Mangere airport on May 4.
