Shorter Skirts Mean Longer Stockings

The hosiery industry, which has already had more than its fair share of troubles, has been handed a whole new set of problems by the shorter short skirt, writes Sheila Black in the “Financial Times.” Wolsey was first in the race when it managed to produce tights in stocking yarns that looked sheer and fitted well. Bear Brand has the same thing on the stocks under the name of Light-Tights. Marks and Spencer—and Wolsey again—have longer stockings with shorter top welts. KayserBondor has its reply coming along early this month but refuses to give away advance secrets.

No marks at all to those firms whose answer has been along the lines “we are doing nothing about it. Just waiting

and watching.” There has surely been enough of that in the stocking business already, and the laggards will be the first to complain if bare legs become the summer fashion.

With longer stockings, suspender belts and girdles have presented problems to their designers. Marks and Spencer add a concealing frill to cover the suspenders. And a hotly-tipped favourite summer garment is the all-in-one pantie, girdle and short slip.
