TOLL LINES REDUCED

Service To N.I.

The telephone link between Christchurch and the North Island was reduced by 49 circuits on Monday, leaving 58 in operation. The Post Office regional engineer (Mr H. W. Wilkinson) said that all circuits in the new mircrowave link to the North Island had been withdrawn. They would be out of service for several weeks to enable engineers to rectify faulty components. Mr Wilkinson said the withdrawal would cause delays in toll calls to the north from time to time. The microwave link, which had been built by an American firm, had been introduced late last year to ease traffic over Christmas rush period. It was now necessary to inspect the five repeater stations between Wellington and Christchurch and iron out all faults. Mr Wilkinson could not say definitely how long the microwave link would be out of action. Weather would govern progress on repairs.

“We -are as anxious as anyone to have the, lines open again as soon as possible,” he said.
