Four New Zealand men swimmers competed in heats on the opening night of the Victorian championships in Melbourne.

P. O’Cowell, of Auckland, won a heat of 100 metres open backstroke in 66sec, the fastest time of the night in this event. He bettered the Victorian record by ,3sec. In the open 200 metres freestyle R. Walker, of Wellington, qualified for the final by winning his heat in 2min 9.6 sec, the fourth fastest of the heats.

In the open 200 metres breaststroke I. Johnstone, of Otago, won his heat comfortably in 2min 48.6 sec, equal fourth fastest time. In the same event G. RuzioSaban, of Auckland, was second in his heat to the Australian junior champion, Szylland, of Melbourne.

Ruzio-Saban clocked 2min 46.1 sec, the second fastest of the heats. Szylland’s time was 2min 45.65ec.
