PASSPORTS ISSUED

Big Chch. Rise Last Year

There was a sharp rise last year in the number of passports issued by the Christchurch office of the Internal Affairs Department. Figures released by the department yesterday show that 4373 new passports were issued and 543 were renewed. This was an increase of 489 new passports and 270 renewals on the figures for 1964. A departmental official said trips overseas by the Christchurch Harmonic Society choir and the New Zealand Brass Band accounted for the increase.

The highest number of passports issued in one month was 507 in March.

Last year the department also issued 998 licences for raffles. The statistics are for the whole of the South Island, except Nelson and Marlborough.
