INDONESIAN PRICES
Curb Urged On Government (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) DJAKARTA, January 9. Indonesian trade unionists have called for Government action to check rocketing price rises. A senior official had said the currency crisis could turn the victory over the October 1 coup attempt into defeat. The soaring prices follow the devaluation of the rupiah to one-thousandth of its old value and a 500 per cent pay increase for state employees on January 1.
The 2,500,000-strong Federation of Moslem Trade Unions has cabled President Sukarno, asking him to check rising prices which it said were sapping people’s will to work.
