Slum Clearance Proposal Soon
(From Our Own Reporter)
WELLINGTON, January 10. Recommendations on ways of accelerating slum clearance and urban redevelopment in New Zealand are expected to be placed before the Government within the next two months.
The Director of Housing (Mr J. V. Jebson) said that he hoped the special committee set up by the Government to study urban renewal would complete its task early in March.
Mr Jebson, who is chairman of the committee, said the meeting of the committee scheduled for February 8 would probably be its last working meeting.
“Two draft reports containing the committee’s views on redevelopment and methods which might be expected to speed it up have been circulated among members. “I hope we can come to agreement at the next meeting and then later hold one further meeting to approve the final report to be made to the Minister of Housing (Mr Rae).”
The committee was established by the Government in April, 1964. It consists of three representatives of the Municipal Association, one each from the Institute of Architects, Institute of Town Planners, the Real Estate Institute, the New Zealand Master Builders’ Federation, the State Advances Corporation, the Treasury and the Valuation Department. The Ministry of Works has two representatives on the committee, one of whom is Mr Jebson.
Announcing the ment of the committee, Mr Rae said he hoped its recommendations would lead to quicker slum clearance and redevelopment.
