ALSATIAN SENTRIES
LQ. Estimate Made (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CHICAGO, January 8. A German shepherd dog has an intelligence quotient comparable with that of a seven-year-old child, according to the current issue of the journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, United Press International reported. The journal, discussing the training and treatment of German shepherd dogs as sentries by the United States Air Force, said the animals have the capacity to learn about 100 commands.
The average dog has a bite equal to 700 pounds per square inch of pressure, and, if sufficiently agitated, can rip off a man’s arm. The Air Force is seeking German shepherd dogs for sentry duty in South-east Asia. Ninety sentry teams were sent to Vietnam last year. The canine sentries usually work a six-hour shift, mostly at night and are generally used for guarding installations from Viet Cong saboteurs.
