PRODUCTION OF MAPS

Department’s Plans The Lands and Survey Department plans to bring out finely detailed maps of the high country of the South Island this year. It will also produce detailed maps of Waimate, Temuka and Lyttelton showing every single property boundary in the areas.

High-country maps drawn from aerial photographs will outline every contour in the hills and valleys, show every stream and river, and mark roads, railway lines, telegraph posts and fences. The chief surveyor for the department in Christchurch (Mr J. M. Grant) said yesterday that such maps had been immensely popular with skiers, mountaineers and fishermen. Detailed maps of the Otira and Ashley areas had been the most sought after recently. He said the department would soon be working on a highly defined map of the Mount Cook area.
