TROTTING Cardigan Bay Voted Horse Of The Year

Cardigan Bay easily won the award, which was decided by ballot. He received 278 points, 92 points more than the runner-up, Bret Hanover, which was voted “horse of the year” in 1961.

Cardigan Bay’s earnings in the United States increased by 208,004 dollars during 1965. He won nine of his 17 races, according to a letter received in Christchurch last week from Mr A. Wesson, publicity director for Hollywood Park. California.

Although it was a notable year it was not one of plain sailing for Cardigan Bay. Dur-

ing the American summer he I was inactive for nearly two months after surgery to have a splint bone removed. Yet, when he recovered, he seemed better than ever. During the autumn he set a world record for geldings, of Imin 57 2-ssec on a mile ■ track, when he won the 50,000i dollar American Pacing Clas- ! sic at Hollywood Park. i Cardigan Bay has won two i further 50,000-dollar events — both at Roosevelt Raceway, New York. On December 2 he beat Adora’s Dream by three lengths in the National Pacing Derby and the next week beat the same runner by five I lengths and a half in the Nassau Pace. In the latter event the former New Zealand pacer, Great Credit, was third. Cardigan Bay, which was aquired for 100,000 dollars by a syndicate headed by Stanley Dancer in 1964, has had 26 wins, 11 seconds and five thirds from his 48 starts in the United States. According to figures given by Mr Wesson, his United States earnings i stand at 470,731 dollars. Not Profitable I Powerful Light, the i runner-up to Moutere Bay in the John Hole Memorial Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday, has not proved profitable for his backers this season. In almost all his 10 starts since October, Powerful Light has been fairly confidently backed, but only twice has he paid a dividend. He has been the each-way favourite three times, second favourite for a win once and the third winfavourite five times. The only time he was at longer odds was at his first start for the season when he was 4-5 in the betting. i On Saturday, Powerful ; Light’s each-way supporters failed to break even. His place dividend was £1 19s. His backers fared worse when he ran second to Gay Gordon at Motukarara in October. On that occasion he paid £1 15s 6d for a place. The best that Powerful Light has managed from his other eight starts this term has been three fourths. Good Judgment Patrons at Washdyke on ; Saturday showed good judgment in selecting the most likely prospects among the maiden pacers in the respective divisions of the Fairlie Handicap. They made Chief Command favourite and he produced a performance which caused his backers no worry. Instead of attempting an all-the-way win —a tactic which earned him four seconds from his five previous starts—Mr P. Van der Looy’s My Chief colt was eased into a trailing position before the half-way mark in the first division and ran the last furlong brilliantly to win by three lengths. The best of Chief Com-

mand’s rivals at the finish was Queen Gypsy. She had no form recommendations, but because she was bracketed with Morant, handled by M. Holmes, she was second favourite.

The second division went to Star Globe, a Johnny Globe gelding prepared by D. G. Jones and J. Grant at Templeton. He had not raced since June, when he ran unplaced, but was confidently backed to win. He was the 4-7 favourite. Star Globe tracked Proudly, the 3-4 favourite, into the straight and ran it out best to beat her by half a length.
