Chch. Girl Attended Finishing Schools

A young Christchurch girl, who had a year to fill before going to university, spent it attending finishing schools in Paris and Switzerland. She is Miss Rhoswyn Seldon, who returned to Christchurch last week.

Miss Seldon spent two terms •t Le Mesal, Montreaux Switzerland, where Queen AnneMarie, of Greece, spent a year before her marriage to King Constantine, and one term at Les Ambassadrices in Paris. Although Miss Seldon had four years of French at school, she found on her arrival in Switzerland that she could not understand French very well. "The only way to learn a language properly is to live with the people,” she said. Both schools saw to it that the students became fluent in French. Each devoted the mornings to French customs, literature and language. At Le Mesal, the students spent the afternoon learning etiquette, cooking, dressmaking, domestic economy and baby care. In addition, they spent five weeks at Gstaad learning to ski.

The programme was slightly different at Les Ambassadrices. There the girls took deportment, beauty care, visited museums and places of interest, and were taken shopping and to the cinema or theatre in their free time. The girls were strictly

chaperoned in Paris, said Miss Seldon. She enjoyed her schooling and found it of great benefit. Miss Seldon, who will study modem languages at the University of Canterbury, this year, also visited Italy and England. While in Switzerland she also studied German.
