State Debt Higher

Reserve Bank overseas exchange holdings fell sharply during the week ended December 30. They were £4.5m lower at £11.5m.

State deposits rose from £12.8m to £14.2m, according to figures released by the Reserve Bank. Trading bank statutory deposits were £52.4m, compared with £49.5m the previous week. The bank note total issue fell slightly from £100.6m to £99.7m. Investments in New Zealand were slightly higher at £34.3m (£33.7m); overseas investments—£23.2m—were unchanged. State indebtedness rose £Q.5m to £76.2m, and marketing organisations were a little better with £43.8m debt (£45.5m). Trading banks’ statutory deposits are £26.8m lower than they were 12 months ago.
