Fast Bowlers Took Over The Scoring

(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. After appearing certain to take an outright win over Central Districts, Canterbury was eventually thwarted in its objective and had to be content with a draw in its Plunket Shield match at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, yesterday.

Canterbury scored 311 and 177 for six declared and Central Districts 178 and 238 for nine wickets.

The match which had, 67 minutes before stumps, seemed likely to end tamely, suddenly developed an intensity hardly ever experienced at the park before, with the crowd entering vociferously into the proceedings, mainly against the Canterbury tactics.

The Central Districts second innings had suddenly taken a dramatic turn for the worse when it lost the wickets of V. Pollard, R. M. Schofield, B. W. Yuile and R. O. Collinge without the addition of a run. This was when it seemed Canterbury was set for an easy win. However, D. H. | Payton and D. A. Kinsella had ■other ideas and played so determinedly against the spinners, J. W. Burtt and M. L. Ryan, that the Canterbury captain, B. F. Hastings, decided to bring on his pacemen, G. A. Bartlett and R. C. Motz, to get rid of the batsmen.

But the fast bowlers, using the old and worn ball, could not obtain the necessary fire. The new ball was required obviously but it was not due un-

til 200 runs were hoisted. The score then was only'about 170. The batsmen were not concerned with making runs, and so the bowlers had to make the runs for them. Both Motz and Bartlett fired a succession of balls wide of the leg stumps, and they flew to the boundary for four byes each time. Motz, bowling from a three-yard run-up, added variety by sending a high ball that also went for four byes. The Central Districts total increased rapidly, and so did the fervour of the barracking from the spectators. Many undignified comments were hurled at the Canterbury players, and at one stage a section started slow hand-clap-ping. Eight times four byes were recorded, and on came the new ball, and into the attack against Payton and Kinsella went Motz and Bartlett. But to no avail. Payton managed to take most of the strike, and Kinsella, when he had to, played as straight a bat as could be desired. Hastings brought Burtt back into the attack with immediate success. Kinsella, after staying at the wicket for 57 minutes, was beaten and bowled by a leg break. There was still 10 minutes left for play and the Central Districts captain, M. E.

Chapple, came to the wicket. Chapple had a badly damaged finger, struck by a Bartlett ball earlier in the match, and he had decided to bat only if required. Motz was promptly brought back on to bowl at Chapple, who survived the over and a bouncer which struck him on the upper arm. After that Payton kept most of the strike against both bowlers.
