Swimmers Lose By One Point
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) SHEPPARTON (Victoria), January 10. In the first of the two “tests” between the New Zealand and Australian universities’ swimming and water polo teams the N.Z.U. side was narrowly beaten by 89 points to 88.
The New Zealand women had an easy win over their Australian counterparts, with Miss J. Durand outstanding. She won the 110yds freestyle in the iriter-Dominion university record time of 67.95ec, was second in the 220yds medley, also breaking the previous record, and third in the 110yds butterfly. In the men’s 440yds freestyle B. Crowder, of Wellington, and P. A. Lacey, of Australia, recorded the same time of 4min 48.2 sec but Lacey was awarded first place. T. Sorensen and M. Hay were first and second respectively in the 110yds breaststroke with times of 82.0 sec
and 82.4 sec. J. Palmer swam well to win the 220 yards and finish second in the 110 yards men’s freestyle.
The New Zealand team began strongly in the water polo and was in control of the game until the final quarter, when Australia scored three quick goals to win 5-3. For New Zealand L. Gunthorp (two), and B. Crowder scored goals. The N.Z.U. goalkeeper, B. Spear, was excellent and W. Williamson saved several goals by good defensive play.
