TANZANIAN AIR FORCE
Canada Aiding Formation
(N.Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copyright) DAR-ES-SALAAM, Jan. 9.
Two officers and 12 airmen of the Royal Canadian Air Force have arrived to help establish a Tanzanian Air Force. The 14 men are an advance party of 50 who will train about 400 men for the air wing of the Tanzanian People’s Defence Force in the next five years.
Under an agreement signed in September, Canada will spend about £3om on the air wing.
It wil provide Tanzania with up to four Caribou and eight other military aircraft, the first of which will arrive in February. Six Tanzanian pilot cadets, who received their wings in Canada last month, will form the nucleus of the new force. Canada agreed to the assistance after West Germany, which was to have done so, withdrew in protest against a decision allowing East Germany to establish a consulate in Dar-es-Salaam.
