TROTTING Moutere Bay Wins Easily At Washdyke
Moutere Bay improved a sound record for his Central Otago owner, Mr R. Jopp, when he beat Powerful Light handily and 14 others easily in the John Hole Memorial Handicap, main race and first leg of the T.A.B. double on the first day of the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Washdyke on Saturday.
F. Oliver brought Moutere Bay forward from mid-field to challenge for the lead near the half-mile and he ran clear three furlongs out.
Bv the time they came to the'straight he was out by the best part of three lengths and he was allowed to coast home to win by a length.
Moutere Bay, after two wins and five minor placings from his previous nine starts this season, was a firm second favourite.
The popular choice, surprisingly, was the runner-up Powerful Light. He ruined what must have been a strong winning chance by galloping off the mark
Half a mile out Powerful Light was still back beyond midfield on the inner and tracking Flying Over. He followed that runner through gaps on the inside till the furlong and ran the last bit brilliantly. Settled Down
Flying Over was a length and a half back third. He settled down on the inside in the fourth line and was not able to improve in a close running field until the straight entrance.
He raised the hopes of his backers when he dashed through to take up the chase after Moutere Bay at the furlong but came to the end of that run a bit closer to home. Flying Over beat Waltz Away, which received the run of the race behind Frugal to the straight, by two and a half lengths. Gold Marti, third on the inner to the straight, was a head away fifth, two and a half lengths ahead of Copper Flame, which was unable to quicken in the run home. Pop’s Donation, the third favourite, was seventh. She started out by trailing the early pacemaker but gradually lost her position each time the lead changed. Another to lose her chance because of luck in the running was Legendary, the fourth fancy. She was up with Pop’s Donation early in the race but with six furlongs left to go had been pushed back to fourth-last. Popular Result Doug’s Choice, a firm favourite and the off-course substitute. rounded off the double w'hen he led from end-to-end in the Kerrytown Handicap. The double dividend of £2O 19s 6d for £1 was shared by
