AUCKLAND, January 9.
Police kept a look-out on the Auckland waterfront drive today ready to sound a shark alarm with a siren and loud-hailer after three sharks had been reported near the Kohimarama sea wall at full tide in the morning.
An eight-foot shark was seen robbing its side hard against the wall by Mrs P. J Beadle, of Kohimarama, who goes to the beach for a swim every morning.
“I was horrified,” she said. “It looked enormous.” Her son. Timothy, then pointed to two more sharks Other people saw the sharks
In the afternoon a launch passing the entrance to Okahu Bay saw a shark and gave the alarm to Auckland Radio. Police warned bathers, set up observation points and kept a close watch on the beaches with binoculars but saw no sharks. TOWED TO BEACH
In the Hauraki Gulf, two miles off Orere Point, two Manurewa men, Mr H. J. Roycroft and Mr J. Mack, caught a 4001 b nine-foot shark which they towed to the beach. They also caught a six-foot shark and four babies.
The manager-pilot of Tourist Air Travel (Captain F. P. Ladd) said no marked increase had been noted in the number of sharks in the area.
In the last few days he had spotted a large brown and a hammerhead shark. Other
amphibian pilots had seen shoals of small sharks on their flights to Waiheke and the Great Barrier. The sharks were brown and travelled in packs of 30 to 40. At Waihi Beach surf lifesavers spotted a small shark in the breakers 40 yards from the beach today about midday. A life-saver on a surf ski and a swimmer on a lilo came within a few yards of the shark.
