The unattached professional, R. R. Newdick, of Auckland, broke the two-day-pld course record of 66 by two strokes for a 72-hole total of 280 and first place in the New Zealand professional golf championship which ended at Mount Maunganui on Saturday.

Newdick beat the defending champion, B. J. Coxon, of Australia, by one stroke, with M. Roesink, of Holland, a ’f urther two strokes away third.

Roesink, C. McGregor (Nev South Wales) and the ama teur, B. Ducker were eact penalised two strokes for play ing to the wrong flag at tht ninth hole during the thirc round. The penalty cost tht Dutchman equal second place G .B. Wolstenholme, of Eng land, was fourth with 285, on( stroke ahead of F. X. Buckler of Lochiel. Newdick’s nine-under-pai round included eight birdies and an eagle. He was unluckj not to have lowered the re cord by another stroke. A four-foot putt hung on the lif of the cup. Newdick played some mag nificent iron shots to the greer during his final round, which often left him putts of onlj three or four feet for birdies

although he sank a 40ft shot during the second nine foi an eagle. Coxon, who set a course record in the first round on Thursday, maintained the steady form he has shown since then in the final round to return a ohe-under-par 72 v after sinking n short putt for . a birdie on the 18th. j The scratch handicapper, E. .J.
