SPEEDWAY CRASH
Driver Escapes With Bruises
j The driver of a threequarter midget racing car, G. Raymond, escaped serious injury when he crashed into the wooden safety fence at the Templeton Speedway Stadium on Saturday night. The car bounced off the fence, rolled over twice and came to rest with its driver jammed underneath in the tiny cockit. A dozen officials quickly righted the car, and St. John Ambulance men treated the semi-conscious driver before assisting him from the car.
A few minutes later Raymond was able to walk back to the pits unaided. He suffered bruises.
His motor-cycle-engined car was extensively damaged in front, and it took six men to drag it from the track so that the race could be run again. The accident occurred only seconds after the referee (Mr B. McKeowen) had signalled the start of the opening three-quarter midget handicap. Raymond shared a 50yard handicap with three other drivers, but drew the outside running. As the field roared past the start-finish, Raymond was forced towards the fence and when he momentarily lost control he had no room in which to manoeuvre.
A few boards had to be replaced in the fence before the race could be run again.
