Conference At Lagos

Sir, —Your excellent editorial is a call for action by energetic people who desire peace in this troubled world. Sanctions in force against Rhodesia now include oil and petrol, copper mining and copper transport, as well as action to ease the drought in Central Africa. All are subject to frictions and frustrations which will ultimately seriously affect millions of people both white and coloured. Before the Lagos conference opens, may I suggest that all sanctions be suspended. Even if they are not suspended I cannot see that they are of any value. To me neither Mr lan Smith nor Mr Harold Wilson has dug down to bedrock and made any concessions to the coloured people. This should be the starting point. Political and diplomatic heat engendered may cause the Beira-Umtali pipeline to be immobilised and the Kariba electricalpower dam to be destroyed by explosives, to say nothing about the flooding of the Zambesi.—Yours, etc., RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru, January 8, 1966.
