Westport Shake Was “Small”
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Jan. 9. The earthquake which shook Westport at 9.57 on Thursday night, was described by the Seismological Observatory today as “small” —with a magnitude of only 3.9 on the Richter scale. Dr. R. D. Adams said that the earthquake’s centre was 160 miles from Wellington. Because the tremor was felt so strongly in Westport, the centre must have been very close.
