W. D. Skelton Could Ride Winning Double

“The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. W. D. Skelton, on Sail Away in the Pahiatua Gup and Hakawai in the Booth’s Gin Handicap, has a good chance of winning the Pahiatua Racing Club’s T.A.B. double at Awapuni today.

There was heavy rain on Thursday night and Friday morning, but it cleared this afternoon and the forecast is favourable.

The going should be good, but with the sting out. Sail Away has apparently come through a hard Australian campaign in good order. In Melbourne he had a shocking run in the Caulfield Cup, but won the Botham Handicap.

Back in New Zealand, Sail Away resumed with a useful race over one mile at weight-for-age in the Manawatu Challenge Stakes. He followed with a useful eighth in the Manawatu Cup and continued for a sixth and a fifth at the Hawke’s Bay meeting. The Pahiatua Cup topweight, Worthy Chat, did not run as well as was hoped at his last start—in the Manawatu Cup—but his earlier form could not be faulted for consistency.

Straight Irish’s owner, Mr J. Coffey, is trying hard to ensure a Wellington Cup start. Though a two-mile winner at Trentham, Straight Irish has already been eliminated from one Wellington Cup and because he is now on the minimum again stands a good chance of again being eliminated. Wrong Track Straight Irish was brought to Wanganui last month, but an easy track ruined any chance he might have had. The same happened at Stratford on Tuesday last, though in that race Straight Irish was quite a fair eighth. Light-weights likely to race prominently are Shut, fourth at his last two starts, and Samuel, good as a hack and now having his firs-t race in open company. At his last start he carried 8 13 solidly to win over one mile and a quarter at Awapuni. Hakawai improved so much between Wanganui and her successful Manawatu race that she would only have to hold that form to be a winner again in the Booths Gin Handicap. Any easing of the track will not affect Hakawai, but it will Plantation, which is in great form and would be a tough rival for Hakawai if the ground were firm. Dalvui s a safe place prospect, at least, having never been unplaced this season.
