TROTTING DOUBLE STEP PICKED TO WIN AT WASHDYKE

The Leeston owner-trainer, A. L. Pratt, for whom Break Through raced so well at the Canterbury 7 Park meeting last week-end, could harness the first winner at Washdyke today.

Double Step will represent the Pratt stable in the First Levels Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting. Double Step lacks recent form but there was promise of early improvement again when she weakened to eighth after making most of the pace over two miles at Ashburton last month. That was the best of her four unplaced runs since she won at Waikouaiti in November. Waikouaiti form will also have proved valuable if Bryan John gets into the finish. One third is the best he has managed in four starts since he won the Three-year-old Stakes at the Waikouaiti meeting. But in his two latest races —the Champion Stakes at Ashburton and the Cross Stakes at Addington last Monday night—he was competing in fairly distinguished company.

Fort Worth, Stormy Scott and Viewin might have the best backing of the others with sound form credentials close up on their records. The First Levels Handicap will be the first leg of the double for course patrons only.

The second leg of this double will be the Second Levels Handicap in which On Probation, Compromise and Fireaway are almost certain to be the most popular fancies. The T.A.B. double will operate on the John Hole Memorial and Kerrytown Handicaps.

Flying Over, Legendary and Moutere Bay might battle it out for honours in the first leg.

In the second leg Loyal Light, Doug’s Choice, Battlefield and the Belfast stablemates, Emily and Lusty Lad, might have the best backing. Although there were showers in South Canterbury during the week they had little affect on the track which should provide fast footing now that the weather seems settled again. Fields are:
