Australia
Australia. By Russel Ward.’ Horwitz. 140 pp. Index, i This useful history of a continent from discovery to the present day is built round those elements in Australia’s evolution which have given her people a sense of their own distinct identity and nationhood. The author, an Australian historian, has also examined the evolving relationship between his country and Britain, and has sought to show why the Australian frontier developed an ethos of co-operation rather than the spirited individualism found in American frontier society. An annotated bibliography offers an excellent guide to more detailed inquiry over a wide range of topics.
