DEVELOPING NEW ONION
Blowflies To Be Used
(Special Crspdt. N.Z P A.) SYDNEY. Jan. 6. ; Blowflies are being used by Australian seed experts to hasten the growth of onions. A seed firm, developing a new, larger type of onion, has taken delivery of 5000 blowflies, specially bred by the Department of Agriculture at its scientific laboratories at Rydalmere, near Sydney. The firm says the blowflies will accelerate its progress in developing the new onion. The blowflies have been put into cages, each containing one flowering onion plant. The flowers must be cross pollinated among themselves, and the blowflies will do the job much quicker than it can be done by hand. The blowflies have replaced bees, which need bigger cages and special care and handling.
