Auckland Leads Junior Tennis

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The Auckland girls’ tennis team swept to a convincing, 6-0, win over Wellington, without conceding a set, in the final of the Home Shield inter-provincial tennis competition yesterday. But the boys final, for the Slazenger Shield, between Auckland and Wellington was still being hotly contested when rain washed out further play.

The teams were even, two matches all, after the first series of singles. The Auckland boys held a.slender sets lead, having won two more sets than their opponents. Of the four further singles matches in progress, Auckland players were holding leads in three of them. D. Cassidy, who had earlier trounced T. Parun. 6-0, 6-1, was leading the Wellington No. One, O. Parun. 6-0, 1-2, while J. Ross was 3-1 ahead against T. Parun and H. Broun had just won the first set against D. Kelly, 6-3. In the other singles, Wellington’s R. Speed led P. Shorter, 4-2, in the first set.

Shorter had earlier featured in an outstanding match with Kelly. After winning the first set, 6-2, but losing the second, 3-6, Shorter looked assured of victory when he led 5-2 in the final set Then Kelly staged a remarkable recovery, attaining complete control as Shorter lost concentration, and the match, 8-6. The Slazenger Shield players are required for play in the New Zealand junior championships today and the event may not be completed until Sunday. Auckland’s victory over Wellington in the Howe Shield was indisputable and the

match was discontinued after Auckland had won the first six matches —five of them with the loss of only four games. HOWE SHIELD
