HAWKE CUP CHALLENGE
Manawatu Is Well Placed (N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON N. Jan. 7. Manawatau, the holder, was in a strong position at stumps on the first day of the Hawke Cup challenge match against Marlborough, being only 23 runs behind with six wickets in hand.
Winning the toss, Manawatu sent Marlborough in to bat on a damp wicket. At lunch Marlborough was well placed at 51 for one, but in a dramatic collapse nine wickets fell for the addition of only 69 runs. Marlborough was all c-rt for 127. The star of the day was a young spin bowler making his first appearance for Manawatu, J. Whitehead, the captain of the Nelson College first eleven last year. In a brilliant display of intelligent bowling he took six wickets for 55 runs. Scores: Marlborough 127 (S. Lane 47; Whitehead 6/55, J. Thomson 3/21) Manawatu 104/4 (I. Downes 36 not out; I. Sparks 3/43).
