YOUNG MEN WARNED
Possession Of Opium <N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 7. Young men caught with opium risked heavier penalties than old people with whom the drug was a lifetime habit, Mr E. F. Rothwell, S.M., said today. He fined a 32-year-old painter, Lim Young, the maximum £lOO for being in possession of prepared opium. Young had pleaded guilty. “The possession of opium and encouragement of its smoking has been somewhat lightly treated in the cases of men of 70, 80 or even 90. when withdrawal of the drug could cause death,” said the Magistrate. “But young men who think they are going to start again something which has been pretty well brought under control and confined within fairly narrow limits must be taught that they are making a big mistake.”
The maximum penalty was seldom imposed on first offenders, the Magistrate said.
